GCU Scores Three First-Half Goals, Shuts Out Dixie State![]()
The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team scored two goals in the first seven minutes and never looked back as it defeated Dixie State College, 3-0, tonight at St. George, Utah.
Freshman forward Kyle Ciliento (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) found junior defender/midfielderTom Hurdle (pictured, North Yorkshire, England/King James) in the second minute, and seven minutes later junior midfielder/forward Pat Perkins (Bremerton, WA/Bremerton)passed to freshman midfielder Nathan Wasson (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton), who found Ciliento to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. It was Ciliento's 18th goal of the season, tops in the PacWest.
The Antelopes scored the final goal in the 31st minute when sophomore defender/forward Nick Sykes (Boise, ID/Mountain View) scored off a shot that was blocked on a corner kick.
First-place GCU raised its record to 12-3-2 overall, 9-1-1 in the Pacific West Conference. Dixie State fell to 5-9-1, 3-8.
The Red Storm were shut out for the third time in as many games. They managed only three shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Ben Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Roseban K College) recorded his conference-leading 10th shutout of the season for the 'Lopes.
GCU hosts Dominican University on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the GCU Soccer Field.
