Antelopes blank Chaminade for 7th shutout
HONOLULU -- You know it's a good day when your goalkeeper gets an assist and your backup goalie scores a goal.
Indeed, it was a good day to be an Antelope.
Grand Canyon men's soccer team shut out host Chaminade 5-0 Monday on a day when both of its goalkeepers recorded points.
GCU (7-6-4, 6-2-2) moved above the .500 mark in recording its seventh shutout of the season. Chaminade fell to 1-17-1, 0-11 PacWest.
The Antelopes cashed in at the 14:38 mark on Nick Sykes' fifth goal of the season. Sykes scored on a longball from Daniel Rodriguez.
Matheau Hall scored two goals, one in each half, giving him three this season. He deposited the first one with 49 seconds to play in the first half, cleaning up the leftover from Sykes to the right of the net.
Sykes' goal and assist tied him with Andrew Bailey for the team lead in points with 12.
Antonio Valera scored on an assist from Brian Green in an all freshmen hookup at 79:33. Hall scored his second goal 34 seconds later when he fielded a punt from goalkeeper Franco Carotenuto and raced in for the winner.
Backup keeper Adam Aguilar (pictured left), making his debut as a forward, scored on a penalty kick at the 86:19 mark.
Carotenuto made two saves in the win. Chaminade keeper Kris Lounsbury stopped five of the 10 Antelope shots on goal.
Grand Canyon will play at BYU-Hawaii Wednesday afternoon.
