Ryan Ruiz is in his second season as an assistant coach for Grand Canyon University.
Ruiz comes to GCU after spending four seasons as an assistant coach for Central Arizona College. He has coached the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Year in each of his seasons with the Vaquero’s. In addition, Ruiz has had 11 position players that were drafted by Major League Baseball clubs during his tenure at Central Arizona College. The Vaquero’s finished second at 2011 Junior College World Series, their second appearance in the last four years.
Ruiz was an assistant coach for the Santa Maria Indians of the California Collegiate League and was voted as the “Next Best Managerial Prospect” in 2008. Last summer, he guided the Rochester Honkers to the Northwoods League Championship Series.
Ruiz had a successful collegiate playing career with Texas Tech University, helping the Red Raiders to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 1998 and 1999. He was a second-team all-conference selection in 1998, leading Texas Tech with a .388 batting average. As a senior, Ruiz was nominated for the Easton Defensive Player of the Year Award.
Ruiz played professionally for eight seasons with the Saint Paul Saints and Sioux City Explorers of the Independent League. He had his best year in 2004 where he hit .310 with 22 doubles and 35 stolen bases, earning him a spot on the North All-Star team.
