PULLMAN, Wash. — Grand Canyon junior designated hitter
Trevor Schmidt hit a two-run homer to straightaway center field to tie Sunday's series finale in the seventh inning, but Washington State pulled away in the eighth to win 6-2.
The Lopes (8-17, 0-3 MW) brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth — loading up the bases — but couldn't extend the game.
Schmidt's breakout performance at the plate highlighted GCU's offensive efforts. In his second start of the season, he went 3 for 4 with a home run accounting for two RBIs. His first long ball of the season went 406 feet to dead center, over a raised crimson outfield wall at Bailey-Brayton Field.
On the mound, junior right-hander
Garrett Ahern provided a strong start for the Lopes, limiting Washington State (11-12, 4-2 MW) to one earned run over six innings while striking out four. He navigated traffic effectively, allowing just three hits and keeping GCU within striking distance deep into the game.
After being held scoreless through six innings, the Lopes capitalized in the seventh when junior first baseman
Cannon Peery was hit by a pitch and Schmidt followed with the game-tying blast.
Lopes senior right-hander
Jace Smith posted a clean seventh inning to maintain the momentum before Washington State's four-run eighth created separation. The Cougars used five hits including a homer and a GCU error to tally the game-deciding four runs in the eighth.
GCU continued to generate late pressure. The Lopes loaded the bases in the ninth inning, bringing the tying run to the plate and forcing Washington State to close the door under pressure. Peery and late-game defensive substitute
Griffin Cameron singled and a pinch-hitting
Marcus Galvan drew a walk, but GCU couldn't push anything across.
The Lopes return to the Grand Canyon State for a midweek matchup in Tucson on Tuesday. GCU will look for its first Mountain West victory when a three-game series begins on Friday against San Diego State.
