TUCSON, Ariz. — Grand Canyon juniors
Cannon Peery and
Trevor Schmidt homered and pulled the Lopes within a run late, but GCU fell to Arizona 5-4 on Tuesday evening at Hi Corbett Field.
Despite out-hitting Arizona 10-9, GCU (8-18) lost by a single run for the third time in five games. The Lopes are now 7-3 in their last 10 meetings with the Wildcats (9-15).
Peery hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning to shrink a 5-0 GCU deficit to 5-2.
Schmidt narrowed the deficit further with a two-run home run in the eighth. The GCU designated hitter homered for the second straight game and pulled the Lopes within a run at 5-4.
Following Schmidt's eighth-inning blast, junior left fielder
Carson Ohland tripled to put the tying run just 90 feet away. GCU could not even the score by scoring Ohland. The Lopes put pressure on in the ninth with sophomore second baseman
Jake Sanko doubling to represent the game-tying run in scoring position. He was stranded at second to end the game.
The four runs generated off of the long ball represented GCU's only scoring on the night.
After mixed results on the mound with Arizona scoring in the game's first three innings, GCU settled in to hold the Wildcats scoreless in the final five frames.
Gunnar Penzkover,
Elijah Higginbottom,
Tommy McGuire and
Jace Smith all contributed to scoreless efforts out of the Lopes' bullpen.
Arizona's five runs through three innings was just enough to fend off GCU's late-game push.
The first six batters in GCU's lineup recorded hits, with especially good production out of the Lopes' 1-2 punch atop the lineup card. Sanko had a three-hit night and was backed up by a two-hit night from graduate catcher
Mito Perez.
GCU returns to Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark to host a Mountain West series against San Diego State beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
