Camden Bates reached base four times Sunday afternoon and figured prominently in Grand Canyon's only scoring burst, but San Diego State pulled away for a 7-2 win in the series finale at GCU Ballpark.
The Lopes (9-20, 1-5 MW) were held to five hits and scored both of their runs in the fifth inning, the lone frame in which the offense broke through against San Diego State starter Alec Belardes.
Bates, a junior, consistently created opportunities from the bottom third of the lineup, reaching four times via three walks and a hit by pitch. The shortstop also added an aggressive baserunning element, swiping a base and repeatedly putting himself in scoring position.
That persistence paid off in the fifth. Sophomore left fielder
Gunnar Penzkover opened the inning with a walk before Bates followed with another free pass. After junior center fielder
Griffin Cameron's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, junior right fielder
Billy Scaldeferri lined a single into left center to bring home both Penzkover and Bates for GCU's only runs of the afternoon.
The two-run inning briefly cut the deficit to 6-2 and represented the Lopes' best chance to shift momentum after San Diego State built an early lead with a two-run first and a four-run fourth.
On the mound, Lopes lefty junior
Chase Frey struck out four over three innings before GCU pieced together the rest of the game with senior
Elijah Higginbottom, freshman
Cody Kiemele, senior
Jace Smith and senior
Brock Toney combining to cover the final six frames.
San Diego State's win claimed the series and moved the Aztecs to 4-2 in MW play.
GCU travels to Fresno State for a Thursday-Friday-Saturday series against the Bulldogs.
