Vakasiuola tied for 2nd as Lopes hit top 5 in California

GCU freshman cards 1st round of 67 with 5 birdies
PALM DESERT, Calif. – Grand Canyon freshman Alexis Vakasiuola posted an outstanidng first round, totaling five birdies, 12 pars and just one bogey Saturday as she led the Lopes to a top-five placement after Day 1 of the Alice and John Wallace Women's Golf Classic.
ROUND 1 RESULTS
GCU shot 10 over par as a team to tie with No. 33 Eastern Michigan and No. 10 Vanderbilt for fifth place. No. 2 South Carolina leads the 16-team field at 15 under, the only school with an under-par scorecard.
The tournament is being played at Monterey Country Club, a par-71, 6,108-yard course.
Vakasiuola started her day at 1 under through eight holes. After her lone bogey on her ninth hole (hole No. 1), she tallied three birdies over her final nine to finish 4 under on the day.
GCU sophomore Allie Justiz, playing in her first tournament of the spring campaign, had a team-high six birdies with three coming over a four-hole stretch (Nos. 3-6). Justiz finished with a 1-under 70 and is the second of two Lopes in the top 10 tied for seventh.
Lopes junior Lena Tremouille (6 over, tied for 61st), junior Jess Haines (9 over, tied for 78th) and freshman Rosie Maguire (12 over, tied for 92nd) close out the starting five for the Lopes. GCU freshman Honor Johnson shot 12 over as an individual entry, while sophomore teammate Matilda Samervong went 4 over to tie for 38th as an individual entry.
GCU's 15 birdies was second best Saturday to only USC's 17. Justiz and Vakasiuola rank second and third, respectively, in birdies. Vakasiuola is also second among 96 golfers in par-4 scoring (3.73).
Round 2 action begins Sunday at 9 a.m. (Phoenix time).
