SAN DIEGO — Grand Canyon battled to the final court Thursday but ultimately fell just short in a 4-3 loss at San Diego State.
Doubles play was tightly contested, with two of the three matches going to tiebreakers. GCU (12-5) earned a win on Court 3, as
Andreas Loizas and
Paolo Rosati took down Paul Janson and Gonzalez Fitzmauric 6-4. However, SDSU (8-9) claimed the doubles point by securing victories on Courts 1 and 2 — both by 7-6 tiebreaker sets, with Denis Maijorov and Alexander Mandma edging out
Jonathan Da Silva and
Brice Patoux in a 7-4 tiebreaker, and Liam Spiers and Marc Kleber topping
Diordan Macababbad and
Nikita Volonski 7-2 in their tiebreaker.
The Lopes responded well in singles, trading blows with the Aztecs. Macababbad delivered GCU's first point with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 win on Court 6, while Patoux followed with a 6-4, 7-5 victory on Court 2. Rosati kept the Lopes in contention with a hard-fought comeback win on Court 4, defeating Spiers 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Despite the strong effort, SDSU closed out the match with key wins. Maijorov took down
Finbar McGarvey 6-2, 6-2 on Court 5, and Mandma outlasted Da Silva in a grueling three-setter (6-7, 6-3, 6-3) on Court 3. The deciding match came down to Court 1, where Fitzmauric secured the win for the Aztecs with a 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 victory over Volonski.
