Grand Canyon came up short in a tough road match, falling 5-2 to UTSA (11-10) on Saturday at UTSA Tennis Center in San Antonio.
The Roadrunners (11-10) struck first, claiming the doubles point with wins on Courts 1 and 3. Oskar Grzegorzewski and Ben Chetewy Ungar won Court 1, defeating GCU's
Jonathan Da Silva and
Brice Patoux 6-1. UTSA sealed the point with a 6-4 win on Court 3 over the Lopes'
Andreas Loizas and
Paolo Rosati. Court 2 was left unfinished, with GCU's
Diordan Macababbad and
Nikita Volonski leading 5-4.
In singles, the Lopes (12-6) showed fight but couldn't quite turn the tide. Da Silva got GCU on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 win on Court 4, and Rosati finished the match by grabbing the second point for the Lopes with a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6)Â tiebreak win on Court 5.
However, UTSA controlled the rest of the courts. Torres, ranked No. 108 nationally, defeated Volonski 6-4, 6-3 on Court 1. Danijal Muminovic and Grzegorzewski followed with straight-set wins over Patoux and Loizas on Courts 2 and 3, respectively. Miguel Alonso clinched the match on Court 6 with a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) win over Macababbad.
The Lopes turn their attention to the postseason with this week's WAC Tournament in Arlington, Texas. GCU has the No. 1 seed and its first match is Friday. Grand Canyon is two wins away from a potential sixth WAC championship.
