CORVALLIS, Ore. — Grand Canyon dropped a Saturday neutral-site contest to Santa Clara 8-3 at Goss Stadium.
Junior right fielder
Josh Wakefield continued to produce offensively, racking up three more hits to raise his average to .489 on the season.
Only five hits were scattered through the remainder of GCU's offense, highlighted by a two-RBI day from graduate center fielder
Eddy Pelc that included a home run.
GCU (12-7) surrendered a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the first and could never catch Santa Clara (8-7) the rest of the way.
The Lopes mounted their biggest threat in the fifth inning by loading up the bases with no outs. Pelc drew a bases-loaded walk to get the Lopes on the board and junior first baseman
Zach Yorke followed with a sacrifice fly. With the deficit cut in half at 4-2, the Lopes re-loaded the bases with one out but a pair of infield outs ended the frame.
Santa Clara homered two more times in the sixth inning to stretch the lead to 8-2.
Pelc homered in the ninth and senior third baseman
Eli Paton tripled, but GCU fell 8-3.
Sophomore righty
Garrett Ahern had built a 3-0 winning record entering the game and lost for the first time, ending an impressive 7-0 start to his college career.
GCU will get a rematch with the host No. 8 Beavers on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
