CORVALLIS, Ore. — Grand Canyon battled with No. 8 Oregon State in a pitching duel but dropped a 3-1 contest on Sunday at Goss Stadium.
The Lopes (12-8) were shut out through eight innings before scratching across a run in the ninth. Oregon State (15-3) scored a run in the third inning to grab a lead and scored two more in the seventh.
GCU junior left-hander
Chance Key (0-3) delivered a solid outing, allowing one unearned run on four hits across 3 1/3 innings but took the tough-luck loss. The bullpen trio of freshman
Billy Gregory, junior
Cam Cunnings and senior
Walter Quinn combined for 4 2/3 innings of relief, surrendering two runs on five hits.
Gregory struck out three in his 2 2/3 innings of relief, lowering his ERA to 0.66 across five games.
GCU's offense had an uncharacteristic day at the plate with 15 strikeouts. Freshman left fielder
Gunnar Penzkover and junior right fielder
Josh Wakefield accounted for two of the three GCU hits, with Wakefield also drawing the team's only walk. Graduate center fielder
Eddy Pelc drove in the lone run on a fielder's choice in the ninth.
The Lopes open WAC play on Friday at Abilene Christian.
