Grand Canyon's undefeated run to start the season comes to an end against a tough road opponent, in Santa Clara.
The Lopes made the drive from Davis, Calif. to Santa Clara after Saturday's match with UC Davis was canceled due to inclement weather. The weather was clear on Sunday for a match between a talented Santa Clara (2-3) team that had faced a loaded schedule to begin the season and the 3-0 Lopes.
In doubles, the senior duo of
Jonathan Da Silva and
Paolo Rosati won Court 3 for the Lopes over SCU's Valentin Faure and Tiago Boschmans, 6-3. The pair moved to 4-0 on the season in doubles. However, the Broncos took victories on Courts 1 and 2 to clinch the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.
The match was played all the way through, allowing each court to finish. Santa Clara took four courts in a row to go up 5-0, winning each in straight sets. Sophomore
Nikita Volonski grabbed the point for GCU on Court 1 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Santa Clara's Alexander Erikkson. Volonski moved to 3-0 on the season in singles.
The final court to finish up was on Court 2, when Grand Canyon's
Brice Patoux and SCU's Luca Lemaitre went to a third set, where they played a ten-point tiebreaker to decide the court. Lemaitre took it 10-7, to give the Broncos the 6-1 victory.
The Lopes next return to action at the GCU Tennis Facility on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. for a match with DePaul.
