BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The 2023-24 Grand Canyon women's golf season has been a memorable one so far. In six tournaments prior to this week's Women's Jackrabbit Invitational, the Lopes had won three and finished inside the top five each time.
GCU added another team title trophy to its case with a dominant victory Wednesday at the Boulder Creek Golf Club, where the Lopes carded a team score of 17 under to finish 19 strokes ahead of second-place Little Rock in a 13-team field.
After rounds of 280 and 289 on Monday, the Lopes improved for a third-round 278 to make GCU the only tournament team to break 290 in each round. GCU is now 98-7 on the season.
GCU was the tournament;s second-highest participant at No. 82, via NCAA Scoreboard Clippd rankings, and defeated the only higher-ranked team (No. 58 Kent State) head to head.
Senior
Carly Strole paced the Lopes in the two days, carding a 54-hole score of 7 under par to place second overall. Strole, along with senior
Constanza Guerrero and junior
Leighton Shosted, tied for the third-most birdies in the tournament with 13. Strole had three birdies Tuesday and shot 1 under, finishing one stroke off the lead entering Tuesday's final round.
Five Lopes placed in the top 15, four of which shot under par for the tournament. GCU sophomore
Ryan Flynn tied for fifth at 3 under par, going 1 under Tuesday with three birdies, including two over her final three holes to secure a top-five placement.
Close behind her was Guerrero, who tallied a team-best five birdies in the final round to shoot 3 under for the day and 2 under overall. Guerrero birdied two of the first three holes Tuesday before closing out the final nine with seven pars and two birdies.
Shosted earned ninth place with a 1-under total, beginning her round with a birdie and finishing with a birdie to total four for the day. Senior teammate
Becca Tschetter had the best round of the day for the Lopes, carding a 5-under final 18 to go 1 over for the tournament. Tschetter ended her day on a roll, registering three birdies and an eagle over her final 10 holes. GCU sophomore
Amelia Curtis shot 14 over for the tournament as an individualist.
The Lopes' 57 birdies led the entire field, while its 3.95 scoring average on par-4 holes and 4.82 average on par-5 holes were field bests.
GCU has now won two of its past three tournaments, with a second-place finish as the other result. It has three tournaments left on its schedule before the WAC Tournament in Payson, Arizona, on April 19-21. Two of its next three tournaments are in Arizona, beginning with the March 16-17 Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Arizona, at \Oakcreek Golf Club.
