The Grand Canyon women's golf team shot its best GCU Invitational round in program history Wednesday and finished with a tournament score that would have easily beat each of the Lopes' winning scores during their GCU Invitational three-peat.
But Wednesday's celebration was modest because a 14-under final round
only beat 19 of the 20 opponents at GCU Golf Course.
The Lopes have a staggering 85-7 record this season, but their joy was only tempered because their 13-under tourney score fell five strokes shy of winner New Mexico State.
GCU jumped four other teams Wednesday to claim runner-up status. but the Lopes have high standards after setting a program record with three tournament wins this season. The Lopes' program-best No. 81 national ranking might get another bump after each of the GCU lineup's five players shot her best round of the tournament Wednesday.
The Lopes' score of 274 would have been a tournament record, if not for CSU Fullerton firing a 273 on Wednesday.

"The way we finished is just phenomenal," GCU head coach
Lauren Giesecke said. "We bounced back from a really rough day for us. They all talked at dinner last night and came together and said, 'We got this. Let's go. Let's stay focused. Let's stick to our plan.' And they did. They went out and killed it. To have everyone on the starting lineup under par was a blessing as a head coach."
Lopes seniors
Constanza Guerrero,
Carly Strole and
Becca Tschetter went out in style in their final home tournament.
Guerrero tied for third place by shooting under par in every round to finish at 9 under after Wednesday's 4-under final round. From the time she put her second shot within 15 feet at the par-5 ninth hole, Guerrero's confidence surged and she dropped four birdies over holes 14-18.
"After three or four years, you've done everything," Guerrero said. "I was so relaxed going into the tournament because I know I can shoot low, and I know these girls can shoot low."
Guerrero's parents attended her college tournament for the first time, traveling from Guerrero's home in Huelva, Spain, to enrich her last home-course competition.
"I keep talking to them about this time of my life, and they've never got to experience it," Guerrero said. "This is the first time they saw how college golf is, and they love the environment and the vibe we have."
Guerrero, Strole and Tschetter and junior
Leighton Shosted improved with each round of the GCU Invitational. Strole and Shosted, who are both from the Phoenix area, came up with late birdies Wednesday to tie for 13th place at 2 under.

Tschetter proved clutch with the most drastic improvement, shaking off Tuesday rounds of 78 and 77 to shoot a 4-under 68 on Wednesday in her final home tournament. The South Dakota native had an early stretch of four birdies over five holes and closed with a birdie to help the team edge CSU Fullerton by one stroke for second place.
"Becca is a fighter," Giesecke said. "We always know that about Becca. She never gives up and will always try her hardest no matter what. She had a great game plan and went into today having a lot of fun with it.
"It was fun to watch all of them, especially for our seniors to end on a high note at their last home tournament. It was really special."
The GCU lineup was rounded out by sophomore
Ryan Flynn shooting 2 under on Wednesday. That tied her for 31st place at 2 over, a three-stroke improvement on her freshman GCU Invitational score last year.
"That was just a bad day for us," Guerrero said of Tuesday. "We didn't play our best, and it showed in our scores, but what we did coming back with 14 under, that's what this team is about. There is not even defined numbers. There's not a top player every week because we keep pushing each other to be out there."
GCU's individual tourney entries also cracked the top 50 of the 119-player field. Freshmen
Brenna Preap and
Lena Tremouille tied for 37th at 3 over, and sophomore
Amelia Curtis tied for 48th at 5 over.
The Lopes finished nine strokes ahead of WAC foe Seattle U (4 under) and well ahead of two other conference members, Tarleton State (34 over) and Southern Utah (44 over).
GCU has four more regular-season tournaments, starting with the March 11-12 Jackrabbit Invitational in Boulder City, Nevada.
"I am so excited about the rest of the season," Guerrero said. "I think we can win the ring and go to regionals and maybe even go to nationals."
