Senior goalkeeper notched 2-save shutout in WAC opener

By: Nick Macdonald

Grand Canyon senior goalkeeper Leon Schmidt garnered WAC Goalkeeper of the Week for his Sunday performance in GCU's WAC-opening victory at UT Rio Grande Valley.

Schmidt helped guide the Lopes' defensive back line to its third shutout of the season, as GCU prevailed 2-0 in Edinburg, Texas.

The Hamburg, Germany, native ranks among the best in WAC play, ranking first in save percentage (.813), shutouts (three) and goals against average (0.9). He is also third in saves (39) and is one of three goalkeepers to play 900 minutes on the season.

GCU continues WAC play Thursday with a 7 p.m. contest versus Air Force at GCU Stadium.
