Grand Canyon was represented by two athletes at the 2024 WAC Tennis Invitational over the weekend.
The WAC Invitational held plenty of importance this year, as a pathway to the ITA Conference Masters Tournament. The Conference Masters is one of the final entry opportunities into the NCAA Individual Championships, which will take place in the fall this season.
GCU junior
Dania Deaifi and sophomore teammate
Gala Arangio competed in the singles bracket and teamed up in the doubles tournament as well. A busy first day of the tournament ensued.
Deaifi and Arangio came out hot in the first round of singles with Arangio, the No. 8 seed, defeating No. 9 seed Liliya Dimova of Seattle U 6-2, 6-0. Deaifi held the sixth seed and knocked off No. 11 seed Ana Gutierrez Sampere of Utah Tech 6-1, 6-3.
The Lopes women had a quick turnaround for the singles quarterfinals, where both lost, as well as the doubles quarterfinals.
In doubles, the No. 5 seed GCU beat No. 4 seed Abilene Christian (Alice Klinteby and Masha Vrsalovic), 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8). The thrilling comeback victory gained the pair some momentum that they carried into Saturday's semifinal match.
The duo took down the No. 1 seed from Tarleton State (Ximena Morales and Emma Persson) 6-1, 6-3. The straight-set victory put Deaifi and Arangio in the Sunday final match.
The GCU pairing started off with a 6-2 victory, but the second set went in the direction of Seattle U's Lamija Avdic and Liliya Dimova. The third set, a 10-point tiebreaker for doubles all weekend, eventually finished in favor of Seattle U at 10-3.
GCUÂ will look ahead to a Fall Invite in Tucson on Nov. 15-17.
