No. 6 Lopes fall to Stanford on the road

Lopes struggle offensively in 3-0 road loss
STANFORD, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's volleyball team lost 3-0 at No. 9 Stanford on Friday night.
The Lopes (21-5, 6-5 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) came out flat in their first road match since Feb. 24, hitting a season-low .122 with 28 kills on 74 attacks. Stanford (12-10, 5-4 MPSF) led wire to wire in the first two sets and closed out the third set on a 6-1 run after GCU tied the match at 19-19.
The first set went 25-17 to Stanford as the Cardinal with just one attacking error on .619 hitting. The Lopes fell behind 7-2 but climbed back in the set trailing just by two at 11-9. Later in the set a kill by senior outside hitter Christian Janke cut the deficit to 20-15 before the Cardinal closed out the set on a 5-2 run.
The second set was more of the same as the Lopes fell 25-17 as the Cardinal led wire to wire. GCU hit .200 in the set with Janke and junior outside hitter Jackson Hickman leading the way offensively with three kills each. Stanford jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, but GCU answered with a 4-0 run in the middle of the set to cut the gap to 13-8. A kill from Hickman made it a 21-16 Stanford lead before the Cardinal finished the set.
The third set was more competitive, as the Lopes and Cardinal battled to a 25-20 Stanford win. GCU and Stanford traded points for most of the set with 12 ties and three lead changes. Junior middle blocker Rico Wardlow put the Lopes up 8-6 with his second kill of the set. Down by two late in the set, back-to-back kills by junior outside hitter Camden Gianni and Janke tied up the match at 18-18. That is when Stanford flipped momentum and ended the set and match on a 7-2 run to complete the sweep.
The Lopes will face the Cardinal in the regular-season finale on Saturday at Maples Pavilion at 6 p.m. (Phoenix time).
