STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team lost a close 4-3 match to Tarleton in the first of three straight matches on the road.
The Lopes (10-9, 4-3 WAC) were competitive throughout dropping a close doubles point but rallied in singles to tie up the match at 3-3. In the final singles match of the day the Texans (12-6, 4-2 WAC) came out on top to clinch the win.
Doubles was tightly contested, and the Lopes jumped out to an early advantage with a 6-1 win at the top court by senior
Natasha Puehse and junior
Santa Strombacha. Meanwhile at court three GCU freshman
Dania Deaifi and sophomore
Valentina Del Marco lost a close 6-4 match to tie up doubles. The 1-0 lead was clinched by the Texans with a close 6-4 win over GCU's
Hebe Toyos and
Madeline Lamoreaux.
In singles Tarleton expanded their lead to 2-0 quickly with a straight set win over Deaifi but the Lopes responded with a 6-0, 6-3 win by Strombacha at court two. The Lopes were able to tie up the match at 2-2 with a win by GCU graduate Lamoreaux at No. 4, her first match at that court in WAC play.
GCU and Tarleton would trade the next two matches with the Texans winning over Del Marco at court four and Puehse winning a tight match at the No. 1 court 6-3, 7-6 to tie the match at 3-3.
Tied up at 3-3 the dual-match win came down to a winner take all singles match at court six. Toyos in just her second conference match of the season lost a close 7-5, 7-5 match as the Texans escaped with a close win.
The Lopes will look to end the weekend road trip with a win on Saturday at Abilene Christian. The match will start at 9 a.m. (Phoenix time).
