TEMPE, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team lost a neutral-site match to Arizona State on Friday morning at the Kiwanis Tennis Center.
The Lopes (2-8) nearly took the doubles point against the Sun Devils (5-2), falling in the final match before Arizona State took control in singles.
In doubles, Arizona State started the match with a 6-3 win over sophomore
Jonathan Da Silva and freshman
David Wekesa at the top court. GCU countered with a 6-3 win at Cour 2 as sophomore
Martim Marujo and junior Loic Van Zegglaar defeated ASU's Constantinos Koshis and Nicola Cigna. The point was clinched at Court 3 with the Sun Devils' Max McKennon and Rio Ginat defeating GCU's
Wyatt Anderson and
Paolo Rosati 6-3.
In singles, the Sun Devils finished off the match with a trio of straight-set wins. Da Silva lost 6-1, 6-0 at the top court while ASU took a 3-0 lead with a win 6-4, 6-2 over Wekesa at Court 4. The dual-match win was clinched for the Sun Devils with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Almasi at Court 3.
The remaining three singles matches were left unfinished.
The Lopes will travel next week to UNLV on March 3.
