U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — The Grand Canyon men's soccer team fell 1-0 at Air Force on Thursday evening.
The decisive goal at Cadet Soccer Stadium came in the 73rd minute as the Lopes, who totaled 13 shots for their third straight double-digit shot game, could not find the equalizer over the final 17 minutes of action.
With wind swirling all game around the stadium, GCU notched seven shots in the first half with one on target. It had six in the second half and was inches away from tying the game in the 89th minute, when Lopes sophomore forward
Zion Long's shot on goal from 8 yards out was kicked away off the goal line by an Air Force defender.
GCU junior goalkeeper
Leon Schmidt had four saves, putting his season total to 72. Schmidt is tied for third with Kendyl Day for the Division I-era program record for saves in a season.
The loss moved GCU to 7-7-2 overall and 2-4-1 in WAC play. While the result did not move the Lopes in the WAC standings, Utah Valley tied with California Baptist an hour later to make Monday's game against the Wolverines a win-and-in scenario for GCU.
The Lopes have seven points in the standings, two points back from Utah Valley. A win Monday would put GCU ahead of Utah Valley at 10 points and earn the sixth seed in the WAC Tournament, which is held in Las Vegas beginning Nov. 5. A tie with Utah Valley would leave GCU one point shy of the sixth-place spot.
The Lopes and Wolverines kick off Monday at 5 p.m. (Phoenix time) with the match streaming on ESPN+.
