TUCSON – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team dropped their first road match of the season with a 7-0 loss to No. 15 Arizona on Saturday.
The Lopes (0-2) faced a tough test in their first road match against the Wildcats (2-0) but were strong in doubles with a win at court two. In singles it was all Arizona as they won all six courts in straight sets.
In doubles the Lopes came back from an early deficit at court two to pick up a win in tiebreakers. Sophomore
Martim Marujo and freshman
William Alsterback were down 2-4 against Arizona's Nick Lagaev and Gustaf Strom but they kept their composure and won four of the next six games to force a tiebreaker at 6-6. The GCU duo would go on to win 7-6 (7-4) in the tiebreaker. Arizona would later clinch the doubles point with wins at courts one and three.
In singles junior
Wyatt Anderson saw his first action of the season slotting into the lineup at No. 6. The San Rafael, Calif. native lost in straight sets to Arizona's Dominique Rolland.
The rest of the singles matches were all won by the Wildcats who featured three players ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's top-125 singles rankings.
Alsterback battled in his match at court five dropping his first set 5-7. GCU freshman
Paolo Rosati who won his first singles match of his collegiate career on Friday against Wichita State battled in a close 3-6, 4-6 loss at court four.
The Lopes will be back in action next weekend when they face UC Santa Barbara and Portland State on the road on Jan. 21 and 22.
