SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team dropped its first road match of the weekend with a 4-0 loss to UC Santa Barbara on Friday.
The Lopes competed at the top double spot, but the Gauchos (4-0) took the point and three singles matches in straight sets.
In doubles, UCSB took the 1-0 lead with wins at the bottom two courts. GCU sophomore
Martim Marujo and freshman
William Alsterback lost 6-2 at No. 2 while freshmen
Alfred Almasi and
Paolo Rosati lost 6-2. At Court 1, the Lopes were on the verge of a victory with sophomore
Jonathan Da Silva and freshman Daivd Wekesa leading 5-4 when their match was left unfinished.
In singles, the Gauchos pressed their advantage with first-set wins on five of the six courts. Rosati lost 6-3, 6-4 at Court 5 and Da Silva lost 6-0, 6-1 at Court 2. The dual-match win was clinched for UC Santa Barbara at the top singles position with a straight-set win over Marujo.
On the other courts, the Lopes were battling when their matches were abandoned. Wekesa, at No. 4, took his first set 6-4 while Almasi lost his first set 7-6. Freshman
Mattia Ghedin, in his first action of the season, had his match let unfinished after losing the first set 6-3 and trailing 3-2 in the second set on Court 6.
The Lope will take on Portland State on Sunday in a neutral-site match at the Arnhold Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
