ABILENE, Texas – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up the regular season with a dramatic 4-3, neutral-site win over UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday.
The Lopes (5-14, 3-3 WAC) dropped a competitive doubles point to UTRGV (5-15, 2-3 WAC) but came back in singles with four wins on Courts 2 through 6 for the comeback win.
In doubles, UTRGV jumped out of the gate with a 6-4 win over GCU senior
Freddie Grant and sophomore
Adrien Coulome at No. 3. Sophomores
Loic Van Zeggelaar and
Stanislas De Samucewicz responded with a 6-4 win at Court 2 before UTRGV clinched the 1-0 lead with a close 6-4 win over the GCU pair of junior
Mariano Argote and freshman
Martim Marujo.
Down early, the Lopes didn't give in and tied up the match in singles with a quick 6-2, 6-4 win by Marujo, who finished with a 4-2 record in conference play. The Lopes took the lead with straight-set wins by De Samucewicz and Coulome at the bottom two courts.
Down 3-1, UTRGV evened the match with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Argote at No. 1 and a 6-4, 6-3 win over Grant at No. 2.
The dual match came down to Van Zeggelaar at Court 4. The GCU sophomore took the first set easily over UTRGV's Alberto Mello 6-1 but dropped the second set 7-5. In the third set, Van Zeggelaar prevailed 6-3 to give GCU the win.
The Lopes will enjoy next week off before heading to Lamar for the WAC Tournament on April 22-24.
