Both Grand Canyon tennis teams will be in action in the first round of the WAC Tournament on Friday. The fourth-seeded Lopes men (5-14) will face fifth-seeded UT Rio Grande Valley in the morning match before the top-seeded GCU women (8-9) face eighth-seeded Abilene Christian in the afternoon at Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
Â
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- All-WAC HONORS: The women were well represented in the All-WAC awards, including junior Natasha Puehse being named WAC Player of the Year. Puehse also earned first-team honors in singles and doubles with partner Santa Strombacha. Strombacha also landed on first-team singles while seniors Fabienne Schmidt and Autum Prudhomme took home second-team doubles honors. Schmidt, a graduate transfer, also earned second-team singles honors.
Â
- REGULAR-SEASON REMATCH: The men will face a familiar opponent in the first round when they face UT Rio Grande Valley. The Lopes and Vaqueros met just 13 days ago in the final match of the regular season with GCU winning 4-3 after UTRGV took the doubles point. Sophomore Loic Van Zeggelaar clinched the win in the final singles match at No. 4 in three sets.
Â
- WEEKEND SCHEDULE: If both teams win, they advance to the semifinals on Saturday. A win by the men and they will take on top-seeded Lamar at 7 a.m. A win by women and they will face the winner of No. 4 UTRGV and No. 5 Seattle U on Saturday at 11 a.m.
SCOUTING
UT Rio Grande Valley finished a game behind the Lopes in the men's WAC standings at 2-4. The Vaqueros have gone 4-6 in their past 10 matches and wrapped up the regular season with a 6-1 win over Prairie View A&M. The two wins for the Vaqueros in conference play came against Chicago State and Seattle U in 4-3 matches. Mish Kvantaliani finished with nine singles wins at No.1 while also partnering with George Hutchings to go 3-1 in WAC doubles.
Abilene Christian was the last team to qualify for the WAC Tournament after finishing conference play with a 2-4 record, including three 4-3 losses. Andrea Guerroro led the Wildcats with 10 singles wins while Sylvia Viljoen and Allison Stewart finished 12-4 at the top doubles position.
