ABILENE, Texas – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team dropped the first of two road matches on Friday with a 7-0 loss to host Abilene Christian.
The Lopes (4-15, 2-3 WAC) dropped a competitive doubles point and the Wildcats (10-11, 4-1 WAC) took the momentum into singles and won all six matches.
In doubles, ACU jumped out of the gate with a 6-1 win over GCU senior
Freddie Grant and sophomore
Adrien Coulome at No. 3. The Wildcats took the point with a close 6-3 win over GCU sophomores
Loic Van Zeggelaar and
Stanislas De Samucewicz. The final match at the top position was also close as junior
Mariano Argote and freshman
Martim Marujo lost 6-4.
In singles, the Wildcats took the first set on five of the six courts. Argote responded after the close loss in doubles with a first-set win at the top position but dropped the next two sets for ACU's 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win.
The Wildcats took the final five matches in straight sets with Van Zeggelaar losing the first set in a tiebreaker before falling in the second. De Samucewicz also battled in his first set, losing 7-5 before ACU's Cesar Barranquero took the second set 6-2.
The Lopes will be back in action for the regular-season finale on Saturday in a neutral-site match against UT Rio Grande Valley at 10:30 a.m.
