Both Grand Canyon tennis teams will kick off a week of Lopes in Las Vegas with two neutral site matches against Illinois State on Tuesday.
The women are coming off their first two matches at home as they faced Tarleton and Colorado State over the weekend. Despite the back-to-back 4-2 losses the Lopes saw strong performances in both singles and doubles.
Against the Texans on March 4, the Lopes took the doubles point with wins at the top two courts.
Natasha Puehse and
Santa Strombacha won 6-3 while fifth-year duo
Autum Prudhomme and
Fabienne Schmidt also won 6-3 at court two. Puehse and and Schmidt also had strong performances in singles against Colorado State on March 6 with the GCU duo winning in straight sets at Nos. 1 and 2.
The men are will have a quick turnaround after taking down UC Riverside on the road on Sunday. The Lopes had to overcome a 2-0 deficit and won four of the final five singles matches to complete the comeback.
Loic Van Zeggelaar and
Stanislas De Samucewicz won in straight sets at the bottom two courts while
Mariano Argote won at No. 2.
Tied up at 3-3, freshman
Martim Marujo had to go to three sets in his match at court four and won 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 and was mobbed by his teammates.
The women will face the Redbirds at 10 a.m. before the men play at 2 p.m. at the Darling Tennis Center.
