RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team rallied to win 4-3 at UC Riverside on Sunday.
The Lopes (2-10) had to come back after dropping the doubles point and it was freshman
Martim Marujo who clinched the dual-match win in the final singles match of the day.
"The boys really embraced the challenge and fight today," GCU assistant head coach
Tatum Prudhomme said. "It was a team effort on all six courts, and that got them through the finish line."
In doubles, the Lopes lost a competitive point to UC Riverside (3-5). After junior
Mariano Argote and Marujo lost 6-1 at the top court, graduate
Freddie Grant and sophomore
Loic Van Zeggelaar won 7-6 at Court 3 with an 8-6 tiebreaker. The GCU pair had to overcome a 5-2 deficit in the set and a 0-4 score in the tiebreaker before winning eight of the last 10 points.
The double point came down to the final court still in play with sophomores
Jiri Novak and
Adrien Coulome at No. 2. The GCU pair also went to a tiebreaker but lost 7-6 (8-6) to give UC Riverside the 1-0 lead.
In singles, UC Riverside quickly extended its lead to 2-0 with a straight-set singles win at No. 1, but GCU began the comeback with a 6-2, 6-2 win by Van Zeggelaar to get a point back. A subsequent win by Argote at Court 2 and sophomore
Stanislas De Samucewicz at Court 6 sent GCU to a 3-2 lead.
The Highlanders countered with a match-tying, three-set win over Grant on Court 3, setting the stage for Marujo at No. 4.
The GCU freshman, who joined the program in the first week of January, lost the first set in a tiebreaker but bounced back with a 6-3 second-set win. In the third set, Marjuo prevailed 6-4 and was mobbed by his teammates on the court.
"We are proud of the way the boys came together to raise each other up today," Lopes associate head coach
Spencer Hing said.
The Lopes will have a quick turnaround for their next match against Illinois State on Tuesday in Las Vegas.
