BEAUMONT, Texas – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up its Texas road trip with a 5-2 win over Chicago State on Saturday morning.
The neutral-site win for the Lopes (4-13, 2-2 WAC) clinches a spot in next month's WAC Tournament as they won all three doubles courts and four singles matches over the Cougars (8-13, 0-4 WAC).
In doubles, the Lopes started the morning match with a 6-2 win by senior
Freddie Grant and sophomore
Adrien Coulome at Court 3. The 1-0 GCU lead was clinched by junior
Mariano Argote and freshman
Martim Marujo taking a 6-4 win at the No. 1 position. Sophomore duo
Jiri Novak and
Loic Van Zeggelaar went to a tiebreaker and eventually won 7-6 (8-6) at Court 2.
The Lopes took the momentum to singles with five first-set wins. Chicago State answered with a straight-set win at the top court over Novak, but the Lopes responded with four straight wins. Marujo cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 while Grant won 7-6, 6-1 at No 3. The dual-match win was clinched by Argote at Court 2 in three sets 6-0, 2-6, 7-6.
The Lopes and Cougars split the final matches with sophomore
Stanislas De Samucewicz winning in straight sets at No. 6 while Van Zeggelaar lost a competitive three-set match at No. 5.
GCU will look to improve its tournament seeding with the final two regular-season matches against Abilene Christian and UT Rio Grande Valley on April 8-9.
