BEAUMONT, Texas – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team picked up its first WAC win of the season by defeating Seattle U 5-2 on Friday.
In the neutral-site match at Lamar, the Lopes (3-13, 1-2 WAC) took the doubles point and four of the six singles matches over the Redhawks (4-17, 0-3 WAC).
In doubles, the Lopes took a 1-0 lead with wins at the bottom two courts. GCU sophomores
Jiri Novak and
Loic Van Zeggelaar won in dominating fashion at No. 2 with a 6-1 win while graduate
Freddie Grant and sophomore
Adrien Coulome picked up a 6-2 win at Court 3. With the doubles point already in hand, junior
Mariano Argote and freshman
Martim Marujo fell 6-2 at the top court.
In singles, the Lopes took four first sets and parlayed those into a trio of three-set wins. Seattle U tied up the match with a straight-set win over Novak at Court 1, but GCU responded with 7-5, 6-2 win by Van Zeggelaar at No. 5 and a 7-5, 6-1 win by De Samucewicz at No. 6.
Up 3-1, the win for the Lopes was clinched by Marujo at No. 4. The GCU freshman won his 7-6 tiebreaker and took a 6-2 second set over Seattle U's Michael Frank. Grant, at Court 3, put the finishing touches on a GCU win with a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) three-set win.
The Lopes will look for the weekend sweep with an early match against Chicago State on Saturday, when play will begin at 7 a.m. (Phoenix time).
