LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis wrapped up the first WAC pod with a 6-1 loss at New Mexico State on Sunday.
The Lopes (2-13, 0-2 WAC) dropped the doubles point and the Aggies (7-12, 2-0 WAC) took five of six singles matches in a rematch of last season's WAC Tournament title dual.
"The guys battled hard for two days in a row" GCU head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "Unfortunately, the scoreline wasn't great losing 1-6. But after dropping the doubles point, we fought back on three courts in singles with large deficits in the first set. We won the first set on four courts, so it was a great momentum after losing doubles."
In singles, the Lopes responded with four first-set wins and sophomore
Loic Van Zeggelaar picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 for his first conference win. The Aggies responded with three-set wins at Courts 3, 5 and 6.
At the top courts, junior
Mariano Argote and senior
Freddie Grant each lost 6-4, 6-3 matches.
GCU will travel to Beaumont, Texas, next week for neutral-site conference matches against Seattle U and Chicago State.
