LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team dropped its WAC opener in a 4-3, neutral-site battle against Lamar on Saturday.
The doubles point proved to be the difference as Lamar (10-6, 2-0 WAC) took the point and split the six singles matches with GCU (2-12, 0-1 WAC).
In doubles, the Lopes fell behind with a 6-2 loss by graduate
Freddie Grant and sophomore
Loic Van Zeggelaar at Court 2 but responded with a 6-4 win by junior
Mariano Argote and freshman
Martim Marujo. The point came down to Court 3, where sophomores
Wyatt Anderson and
Grzegorz Rudnicki lost 7-6 in a 7-2 tiebreaker.
Up 1-0, Lamar quickly extended its lead in singles with a straight-set win at No. 6, but the Lopes responded with a 6-2, 7-5 win by Grant at Court 2.
After Lamar countered with a win at No. 3 to make it a 3-1 match, the Lopes fought back again with a three-set win by Marujo. In his first conference match, the Portugal native won the first set 6-3 and then battled back from a second-set loss to win 6-2 in the third.
Lamar clinched the team win with a three-set win at the top singles court over Argote, but GCU sophomore
Stanislas De Samucewicz wrapped up the day on a good note with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 5.
The men will face rival New Mexico State on Sunday to wrap up the first WAC pod at 9 a.m. (Phoenix time).
