The Grand Canyon baseball team jumped on Utah Valley for five runs in the first inning and added four more in the second inning to cruise to an 11-1 victory in seven innings at GCU Ballpark on Friday night.
The Lopes (11-8, 4-0 WAC) had five of their first six batters reach base and hit two home runs and two doubles in the first. In the second, the first five GCU batters reached, and the Lopes took a 9-0 lead over Utah Valley (6-11, 2-5 WAC) before the fifth out was recorded.
While the offense was cooking, GCU starting pitcher
Nick Hull was cruising. The right-hander struck out a career-high 10 batters and earned his first victory of the season.
"He's done a great job," Lopes pitching coach
Jon Wente said. "As Friday night guys go, I like our chances on Friday night. Sometimes it gets tough. We've played really great teams and we've played great Friday night guys. Tonight was his night."
Hull returned for his fifth collegiate season to carve out a role as a starter. He faced just two over the minimum in six innings.
"I told myself that someone's going to have to take the ball out of my hand for me to call my career over," Hull said. "I know that I could help this team win a lot of baseball games, and I hope to take us further this year than last year."
The Wolverines scored their only run of the game in the sixth to bring the tally to 9-1, but the Lopes countered with a run in the sixth and another in the seventh to end the game early via the conference's 10-run mercy rule.
GCU sophomore first baseman
Elijah Buries logged the game's first extra-base hit to score the Lopes' first run. Sophomore shortstop
Jacob Wilson hit his sixth home run to put GCU in front 3-0. Senior third baseman
Juan Colato homered for the first time this season to push the lead to 4-0. The first inning came to a close when sophomore catcher
Tyler Wilson doubled in GCU's fifth run.
The Lopes picked things right back up in the second. After sophomore center fielder
Homer Bush Jr. led off the inning with a double, a pair of walks loaded the bases. Junior right fielder
Tayler Aguilar got in on the scoring with a two-run single.
Jacob Wilson scored on a wild pitch and Aguilar scored on a sacrifice fly to stake the Lopes to a 9-0 lead.
Aguilar matched
Jacob Wilson with his sixth homer of the season, a solo shot in the sixth. GCU ended the game in the seventh after loading the bases with no outs and Wilson scoring the final run on a deep fly to right-center.
Jacob Wilson,
Tyler Wilson, Aguilar and Colato each finished the night with two hits, while
Jacob Wilson and Aguilar each had three RBIs.
GCU pushed its cumulative scoring in WAC play to 43-8 over its opposition.
The Lopes and Wolverines will meet for the second game of the series at 6 p.m. Saturday at GCU Ballpark.
