CORVALLIS, Ore. — Grand Canyon tallied 15 hits, eight doubles, 13 runs and did not strike out. An impressive offensive display led the Lopes to a dominant 13-7 victory at No. 5 Oregon State on Wednesday to split the midweek series.
The Lopes (10-8) recorded their first-ever victory over a top-five opponent.
The Beavers (12-3) had a visiting team score 13 runs on them for the first time since April 16, 2010.
"We were relentless offensively," GCU head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "I'm proud of the bounce back. A lesser team would have taken a tough loss last night and just gone through the motions today. The guys stayed on it and I'm proud of them."
GCU used a multi-faceted offensive attack, scoring runs in six innings and accumulating its most doubles in a game since 2015.
On the mound, six GCU pitchers combined to limit the nation's third-highest hitting team to six earned runs while walking only two.
"
Carter Young — a big start out of him," Stankiewicz said. "We needed that. Also
Connor Markl. We asked a starter if he could come out here to help us if we needed it, and he was all for it. Tip your cap to that young man. That was a big inning or so."
Young tossed five innings and limited the Beavers to three runs (two earned) en route to his first victory of the season. Markl cleaned up the seventh inning and tossed a scoreless eighth to quell hope of a late Oregon State rally.
GCU's No. 3 and 4 hitters — sophomore shortstop
Jacob Wilson and junior right fielder
Tayler Aguilar — combined for six hits, six RBIs, five runs, four doubles and a home run. Wilson added on to a two-game midweek series in which he collected seven hits, five RBIs and four doubles.
"We came out here to a top-five team in the nation and came out swinging it," Wilson said. "We believe hitting is contagious, so it was a really good two-game midweek for us. It was a great team win for the Lopes. We can compete with any team in the nation. The bats are there. The pitching is there."
For the second straight day, GCU jumped on the board with two runs in the first. Sophomore center fielder
Homer Bush Jr. singled, sophomore first baseman
Elijah Buries walked and an RBI single by Wilson put the Lopes up 1-0. Senior third baseman
Juan Colato drove in another run on a sacrifice fly.
The Lopes went back to work in the third. After Bush drew a leadoff walk, Wilson and Aguilar combined for back-to-back doubles with Aguilar's scoring two. GCU capped a three-run inning with an RBI single from Colato to go up 5-0.
In the fifth, GCU scored again when sophomore designated hitter
Dalton Sloniger laid down a safety squeeze bunt to bring home Aguilar, who had doubled.
Oregon State finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run frame. Young worked his way through trouble to get through the fifth with a 6-3 lead intact and enough innings to qualify for the win.
The Lopes took Oregon State's three-run spot and raised it for a four-run sixth. Senior second baseman
Jonny Weaver and Wilson logged doubles and Aguilar cleaned things up with a two-run home run to stake the Lopes to a 10-3 lead and immediately reverse the game's momentum.
Freshman left fielder
Maxwell Andeel and Weaver each hit doubles to add a run in the seventh.
Oregon State narrowed the deficit with a two-run seventh, but the Lopes again had an answer. GCU tallied two runs in the ninth after the first three batters reached. Weaver grounded into a double play to net a run and Bush doubled to net another.
The Beavers struck for two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but GCU did not have to worry with eight runs of insurance entering the inning.
"I thought our offensive approach these last two games was as good as we've been able to do in a while," Stankiewicz said. "We did a good job of building up momentum as we get into the weekend."
For the two-game series, the Lopes' offense finished with 21 runs on 29 hits. GCU improved to 2-1 against Pac-12 schools on the season.
The Lopes return home and resume WAC play with a three-game set against Utah Valley, beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. at GCU Ballpark.
