FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis dropped a road match to Northern Arizona 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Lopes (1-10) lost a competitive doubles point to the Lumberjacks (9-4) before NAU took three singles matches to clinch the dual-match win.
In doubles the Lopes dropped the point with losses at courts one and three.
Jiri Novak and
Martim Marujo teamed up at the top court and lost their match 6-3 while
Freddie Grant and
Loic Van Zeggelaar fell 6-3 at No. 3 to give the Lumberjacks the 1-0 lead. After the point was clinched
Jiri Novak and
Adrien Coulome won a close 6-4 match at No. 2.
In singles NAU took the first set on five of the six courts.
Grzegorz Rudnicki at No. 6 won his first set in dominating fashion over NAU's Joachim Schaefer 6-0. Rudnicki would drop the second set 3-6 and was down 0-3 when his match was left unfinished.
NAU clinched the team win with straight set wins at Nos. 3, 1, and 5. Argote at court two dropped his first set in a tiebreaker 6-7 and was up 2-1 before his match was left unfinished. Likewise Van Zeggelaar lost his first set 5-7 and was tied 2-2 in the second set before the match was abandoned.
The Lopes will be back in action next week at UC Riverside on March 6.
