BOULDER, Colo. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team wrapped up the Mark Simpson Invitational on Tuesday with a team score of 12 over par for eighth place out of 16 participating schools.
The second round, which was scheduled to be completed Monday afternoon, was suspended because of rain in the Boulder area and continued Tuesday morning with the third round following it.
Two GCU players finished in the top 20, including sophomore
Josh McCabe and senior
Matthew Braley. They tied for 19th at 2 over par. McCabe carded his best score in Tuesday's final round, shooting a 1-under 69 with five birdies. McCabe jumped 12 spots in the final round to earn the top-20 finish. Braley shot an even-par final round to help put two Lopes in the top 20 for the third time this season.
Junior
Nicky Kling placed third among the Lopes and tied for 26th overall at 3 over. He shot a 3-under second round before a 2-over final round. He had 10 birdies in the second and third rounds combined. Fifth-year senior
Parker Reddig tied for 42nd at 6 over, while junior
Craig Passmore tied for 59th at 9 over in his first tournament of the season.
Individualist sophomore
Sam Murphy tied for 77th at 13 over.
The Lopes take two weeks off before continuing their fall season at the Stockton (California) Invitational hosted by Pacific on Oct. 20-22. GCU concludes fall play Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in the Saint Mary's Invitational in Pebble Beach, California.
Day 1 recap
The GCU men's golf team concluded Day 1 of the Mark Simpson Invitational on Monday at Boulder Country Club. First-round action was complete before rain halted the second round in the afternoon.
The remainder of the second round will begin at 6:30 a.m. (Phoenix time) on Tuesday with the third and final round to follow.
The Lopes sit in 10th place out of 16 schools with a score of 8 over par. GCU is seeking its third consecutive top-five finish and is eight strokes back from fifth-place Louisiana-Monroe.
Reddig placed best for the Lopes in a tie for 26th at 1 over for the day. He was shooting 1 under during the second round through 10 holes before the stoppage. Braley is one place behind Reddig in a tie for 31st at 2 over. Braley was in the top 15 at 1 under after the first 18 holes.
Kling, who placed third last weekend in Kingsburg, California, is tied for 41st at 3 over. Kling jumped 23 spots from the first round to the second round with two birdies through six holes. McCabe is 4 over and tied for 47th while Passmore is 5 over and tied for 57th. Murphy, who is competing as an individual, is tied with Passmore at 5 over.
