Grand Canyon is among only six programs nationally to feature three Freshman All-Americans. Starting pitcher
Carter Young, first baseman
Elijah Buries and third baseman
Jacob Wilson each received recognition on the team released by
Collegiate Baseball on Wednesday.
The Lopes match Arizona State, LSU, Mississippi State, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara — all NCAA tournament qualifiers — with three selections on the team.
"GCU baseball would like to congratulate Elijah, Jacob and Carter on receiving Freshman All-American honors," Lopes head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "All three embody the spirit of GCU baseball: competing with honor and a team-first mentality. I'm excited for their continued growth and success at GCU."
Wilson and Buries were both first-team All-WAC selections, while Young landed on the All-WAC second team. Buries was also named to the Tucson Regional All-Tournament team after going 5 for 9 in GCU's D-I postseason debut.
This year's selections join
Pierson Ohl who was GCU's first Freshman All-American in 2019.
Additionally, Young was also named a Freshman All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association,
landing on the second team.
Buries and Wilson led a talented class of freshman position players that accounted for 39.1% of GCU's hits on the season. Freshmen compiled 230 hits, 50 more hits than the nearest class of Lopes (seniors, 180). In addition to the 67 hits for Buries and 57 hits for
Jacob Wilson, freshmen
Tyler Wilson (38) and
Cade Verdusco (34) also checked in with over 30 hits.
Buries was GCU's top hitter, finishing with team-high marks in batting average (.374), slugging (.553), on-base percentage (.433) and stolen bases (13). In the WAC, he finished third in average, fifth in slugging, eighth in on-base percentage and fourth in steals. Buries finished among the nation's top 20 in batting average for freshmen. He had three four-hit games on the year — including GCU's WAC tournament opener — and a two-homer game at Tarleton. Buries posted the highest batting average by a Lopes freshman since Trevor Santor hit .384 in 2010 at the D-II level.
While providing impressive defense at the hot corner, Wilson checked in as one of seven consistent Lopes players to bat over .300. The freshman hit .313 overall and .356 in WAC play. He finished second in the WAC in fewest strikeouts and was a top-15 batter in conference play by batting average. Wilson slugged four home runs on the year including one in a WAC tournament win over No. 2-seeded Sacramento State and one in the Tucson Regional off of No. 23 Oklahoma State.
Young had a case for both WAC Freshman of the Year and WAC Pitcher of the Year after finishing with the conference's top ERA (2.37) and fifth in victories (seven). The righty began the season with a win over Missouri in his first collegiate start in a season that included a midseason run of five consecutive victories. The Casper, Wyoming, native also posted a 19-inning scoreless streak spanning starts against Seattle U, Tulane, Utah Valley and Northern Colorado. Young matched
Jack Schneider with most wins by a Lopes freshman in the D-I era.
