LOS ANGELES — The Grand Canyon women's tennis team lost the program's first NCAA tournament match, falling 4-0 to No. 4 UCLA on Friday at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
It was the end of a historic season that culminated with the first WAC tournament championship for the Lopes (12-9). GCU finished 11-2 in its last 13 matches. Against the Bruins, the Lopes dropped the doubles point and the bottom three singles matches.
In doubles, UCLA (20-4) took the 1-0 lead with wins at the top two courts. GCU's top duo of
Natasha Puehse and
Jana Weiss lost to the Bruins' Abbey Forbes and Jada Hart 6-1 to kick off the match. The doubles point was clinched at the middle court when GCU's
Emilia Occhipinti and
Autum Prudhomme had their 13-match winning streak snapped with a 6-2 loss to UCLA's Annette Goulak and Vivian Wolff. Freshman
Taylor Andersen and
Joely Lomas had their match left unfinished down 5-2.
The Bruins jumped out to an advantage in singles, taking the first set on all six courts. At the top three positions, GCU had its matches left unfinished as the Lopes went toe-to-toe with the top players from UCLA. Puehse, at No. 1, dropped her first set 6-1 but battled to a 4-2 scoreline in the second set. Occhipinti held a 3-2 lead in her first set before falling 6-4. At No. 3, Weiss lost her first set 6-2 and was down 3-0 in the second set when the match was called.
UCLA took advantage at the bottom three courts to win the final points needed to advance to the NCAA second round. Andersen lost in straight sets at No. 6, while her doubles partner Lomas battled in a 6-1, 6-0 loss at No. 4. The final point was clinched with a 6-1, 6-1 loss by Prudhomme to UCLA's Annette Goulak.
The Lopes return five players, including the WAC Singles Player of the Year in Puehse, when it begins its conference title defense next season.
