MARICOPA, Ariz. – Grand Canyon freshman golferÂ
Lani Luafalealo finished runner-up at the Cowgirl Classic, hosted by Wyoming, and GCU finished in third place in the 20-team tournament on Tuesday at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
Only five players in the 114-player field finished under par. Luafalealo finished with a 213 total (3 under par), just two shots behind medalist winner Brittany Shin of CSU Fullerton.
Luafalealo, who took fifth at the GCU Invitational last month, led the field in par-five scoring (6 under par) and recorded a tournament-high two eagles.
New Mexico State won the team title with an 869 score. South Dakota State (876), GCU (878), Gonzaga (881) and Nevada (887) rounded out the top five.

GCU is back in action on Sunday and Monday at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.

Day 1 recap
GCU completed the first day with a two-round total of 571 (5 under par). The Lopes easily bested their previous 36-hole record score of 576, which was set in the 2017-18 and 2019-20 seasons.
Coming off team titles in two of their previous three tournaments, the Lopes enter Tuesday's final round with a three-shot lead over South Dakota State (574). New Mexico State (579), Gonzaga (585) and Nevada (589) rounded out the top five.
Luafalealo finished the day in a tie for second place at 5 under par. Luafalealo's sub-par rounds of 71 and 68 placed her within one shot of leader Brittany Shin of CSU Fullerton.
GCU's Fehringer and Strole each finished the first 36 holes at 1 under par to be in a tie for fifth.
Other Lopes scores included Patchana's 148, Sandstrom's 151 and Belmonte's 157.
The key stat of the day was GCU's performance on par-5 holes. The Lopes went a tournament-best 9 under par on the par 5s.Â
