LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team remained perfect in WAC play with a 7-0 sweep of Chicago State on Saturday.
It was the team's eighth win in a row and the Lopes clinched at least a share of their second straight WAC regular-season title.
It was also a special win for GCU head coach
Greg Prudhomme, who won his 150th match in his 14th season at the helm of the women's tennis program. Prudhomme already became the winningest coach in GCU women's tennis history, passing Carol Sandvig with his 138th career win in 2019.
The Lopes (9-7, 5-0 WAC) won on two doubles courts and on five singles courts as Chicago State (3-12, 1-5 WAC) did not have a third doubles team or sixth singles player in its lineup.
In doubles, senior
Joely Lomas and freshman
Taylor Andersen picked up a win by default at No. 3, but the Cougars came back with a 6-3 win over sophomore
Natasha Puehse and junior
Jana Weiss at No. 1. The Lopes rebounded and clinched the 1-0 lead at No. 2 with a 6-3 win by senior duo
Emilia Occhipinti and
Autum Prudhomme at court two.
The 1-0 lead for GCU turned into a 2-0 lead heading into singles, as Andersen won by default at No. 6. The Lopes only needed two more singles wins to clinch the dual match and those wins came by the top two singles players. Puehse, at No. 1, extended her winning streak to nine with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over CSU's Kristina Pukhaeva while Weiss, at No. 3, clinched the win for the Lopes with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 win.
Puehse and Weiss share the team lead with 12-4 singles records and 5-0 marks in WAC play.
With the match already in the books for the Lopes, the team closed out the day with three more straight-set wins. Lomas won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 for her seventh win on the year while Prudhomme won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5. The match wrapped up with a win by Occhipinti, the senior captain who won a close 7-5 first set before closing out the match with a 6-1 second-set win.
The Lopes will have a chance to clinch an outright title and the WAC Tournament's No. 1 with a win against New Mexico State on Sunday. A loss would trigger a three-way regular-season tie among GCU, New Mexico State and conference newcomer Tarleton State. The GCU-NMSU match will begin at 8 a.m. (Phoenix time).
