The Grand Canyon men's tennis team won its fourth match in a row Tuesday with a 6-1 win over UC Riverside at the GCU Tennis Facility.
The Lopes (5-12) won the doubles point for the sixth consecutive match and took five of six singles matches to wrap up the win.
In doubles,
Valentin Lang and
Jiri Novak won their eighth match in a row at No. 1 with a 6-2 win. After UC Riverside (1-8) countered with a 6-2 win at No. 3, recently named WAC Doubles Players of the Week
Freddie Grant and
Loic Van Zeggelaar clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
In singles, the Lopes parlayed four first-set victories into wins. The bottom two courts were the first to finish with Novak winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 and Grant wrapped up his match with a 6-0, 6-3 scoreline at No. 6. The match was clinched by
Mariano Argote at No. 2 with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win and Lang at No. 1 quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win to put the Lopes up 5-0.
The final two singles matches went to 10-point tiebreakers in the third sets. Freshman
Jonathan Da Silva prevailed 10-6 in his tiebreaker after rally with a 6-2 win in the second set.
Justin Cvitanovic also forced a third set with a 6-3 second set win at No. 3 but was unable to finish the tiebreaker.
The Lopes will be wrap up the regular season next week against Northern Arizona at the GCU Tennis Facility.
