PROVO, Utah — The Grand Canyon women's tennis team lost 6-1 at BYU on Friday.
BYU (8-5) controlled most of the match by winning all three doubles matches and the first three singles matches. Junior
Jana Weiss provided the point for GCU with a win in singles at No. 4.
For the first time this season, the Lopes (1-6) played indoor and BYU used that to its advantage for an early lead in doubles. Weiss and sophomore
Natasha Puehse were blanked 6-0 at No. 1 and senior duo
Emilia Occhipinti and
Autum Prudhomme lost 6-2 at No. 2. With the point clinched, the Cougars added a third win with a close 6-4 win over
Taylor Andersen and
Joely Lomas at No. 3.
In singles, the Lopes lost on five of six courts. Weiss was the only Lope to win her first set, holding a 6-3 advantage over BYU's Kara Lin. Lin would bounce back with a 6-2 second set but Weiss proved to be too much and prevailed in the third winning 6-3. It was the Austrian's third straight singles win as she took over the team lead with a 4-3 record.
At No. 2, Occhipinti regrouped after a 6-1, first-set loss to win 7-5 in a close contest with the Cougars' Leah Heimuli. Heimuli went onto the third set, 6-4, to clinch the dual win for BYU. The Cougars won the other four singles matches in straight sets with Andersen battling to a 6-2, 7-5 loss.
The Lopes have a quick turnaround as they host New Mexico on Monday at 11 a.m. at the GCU Tennis Facility.
