The No. 20 Grand Canyon men's soccer team hosts Dixie State in the final home match of the season Friday night. The Lopes celebrate Senior Night, as well as the final home match for head coach
Schellas Hyndman, who is retiring after this season.
The match will be streamed live
GCUTVÂ and the
WAC Digital Network.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- JUST THE BEGINNING: GCU stayed undefeated last week with a win over California. The Lopes' 5-0 record is the best start in program history and makes GCU one of just nine teams in the nation with an undefeated and untied record.
- NATIONAL RECOGNITION: The Lopes are ranked in three national polls this week, checking in at No. 20 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, No. 24 in the Top Drawer Soccer Poll and No. 25 in the College Soccer News poll. GCU also is ranked No. 11 in NCAA RPI. Senior midfielder Justin Rasmussen also earned national recognition this week as the first GCU student-athlete to be named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
- END OF AN ERA: GCU head coach Schellas Hyndman announced that he will retire at the conclusion of this season. Hyndman is the second-winningest active coach in Division I men's soccer with a 508-169-58 record. He was inducted into the United Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame in the offseason in recognition of his 37-season coaching career.
SCOUTING
Dixie State is in sixth place in the WAC with a 2-4 overall and conference record. The Trailblazers started the season with back-to-back losses at home to Air Force and San Jose State before picking up their first win, 2-1, at Incarnate Word. Dixie State dropped two more matches, getting shut out by Seattle U and California Baptist. In their last matchup, the Trailblazers took down Houston Baptist 2-1 for their first home victory of the season.
Junior midfielder Idris Alabi leads Dixie State with seven points, having scored three goals and recorded an assist in six matches.
This is Dixie State's first season in the WAC. The Trailblazers were picked to finish last in the WAC after going 9-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 2019.
LAST TIME OUT
- GCU took down California Baptist at home, 3-2, last Friday night.
