SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team were shutout against Cal Poly losing 7-0 on the road.
The Lopes (1-10) dropped each doubles match and singles match in straight sets as the Mustangs controlled the dual-match at the Mustang Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon.
Cal Poly (5-7) took the doubles point with wins on all three courts. Senior
Freddie Grant and freshman
Loic Van Zeggelaar were swept 6-0 to start the match at No. 2 and the Mustangs clinched the 1-0 team lead with a 6-2 win over fellow GCU senior and freshman duo
Valentin Lang and
Jiri Novak at No. 1.
Justin Cvitanovic and
Mariano Argote would lost 6-2 on court two after the point had already been clinched.
Up 1-0 Cal Poly continued to apply pressure taking all six first sets against the Lopes. Novak and Argote for the second match in a row, lost in straight sets at courts four and two giving the Mustangs a 3-0 lead. The dual-match win was clinched for Cal Poly at No. 3 with Cvitanovic losing to Antoine Noel 6-2 ,with a competitive second set, 6-4.
GCU freshman
Jonathan Da Silva, who picked up his first collegiate singles win on Tuesday against Utah State, lost his match in close 7-5 first set followed by a 6-2 second set loss to Gary Vardanyan. Lang and Grant would wrap up the match with 6-4, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-3 losses respectively at Nos. 1 and 6.
The Lopes will look to rebound tomorrow with a neutral site match against Gonzaga at Cal Poly at 11 a.m.
