SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team lost a neutral site match to Gonzaga 5-2 at Cal Poly.
The Lopes (1-11) held the early lead after taking the doubles point but lost momentum and fell in five of six singles matches.
GCU took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. After
Freddie Grant and
Loic Van Zeggelaar lost 6-3 at No. 3 the Lopes regrouped with a 6-3 win by
Justin Cvitanovic and
Mariano Argote at No. 2. The point was clinched by senior
Valentin Lang and freshman
Jiri Novak at No. 1 with a close 7-5 win over Gonzaga's Matthew Hollingworth and Leon Roider.
In singles Gonzaga (8-2) regained momentum with first set wins on five of the six courts. Novak lost quickly at No. 4, but Grant got the Lopes a second point with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6. It was the second win in the last three matches for the Surrey, England native.
With GCU leading 2-1, the Zags then took control the rest of the match winning the final four singles matches in straight sets. Argote and Lang lost 6-4, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-4 respectively at the top two positions, paving the way for the Bulldogs to win the dual-match win at No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Cvitanovic.
Da Silva at No. 5 lost his first set 4-6 but forced tiebreakers in the second but wasn't able to pull out the win losing 6-7 (4-7).
The Lopes will enjoy next week off and then host Idaho State at the GCU Tennis Facility on March 23.
