TEMPE, Ariz.—The Grand Canyon men's tennis team was swept 7-0 by Arizona State on Wednesday afternoon in Tempe.
The Lopes (0-7) were unable to win a match in either singles or doubles but forced three singles matches to go to three sets.
In doubles Arizona State (2-1) won at the top two positions to take the point. Senior
Justin Cvitanovic and sophomore
Mariano Argote lost 6-3 at No. 1 while freshman duo
Loic Van Zeggelaar and
Stanislas De Samucewicz lost a close 7-5 match at No. 2.
Wolmar Boris-Moller and
Jonathan Da Silva's match at No. 3 was left unfinished
In singles GCU fell behind early dropping all six first sets but a trio of Lopes regrouped to force third sets in their matches. At No. 3, Boris Moller dropped his first set 6-3 but rebounded and won his second set 6-2.
Freddie Grant, who was inserted into the singles lineup, followed up his close 7-5 first set defeat with a 7-6 tiebreaker win in the second. Like Grant, Van Zeggelaar lost his first set 6-3 at No. 6 but took the second set in a 7-6 scoreline. The Sun Devils would win all three of those matches in three sets.
With the postponement of the UC Irvine matches this weekend the Lopes will be back in action next week at home for a pair of matches against UC Riverside Feb. 15 and 16.
