The Grand Canyon men's soccer team travels to San Jose State for its first road match of the 2020-21 season. The Lopes (1-0, 1-0 WAC) take on the Spartans (1-0, 1-0 WAC) on Saturday at 8 p.m. (Phoenix time) at the Spartan Soccer Complex.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- MAKING AN ENTRANCE: Two Lopes scored career-first goals in the season opener vs. Houston Baptist. Freshman forward Maximilian Moeller scored GCU's first goal while senior forward Rey Gaytan made the game winner.
- END OF AN ERA: GCU head coach Schellas Hyndman announced that he will be retiring at the conclusion of this season. Hyndman is the second-winningest active coach in Division I men's soccer with a 504-169-58 head coaching record. He was inducted into the United Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame in the offseason in recognition of his 37-season coaching career.
- RETURNING AWARD WINNERS: GCU returns all six of its 2019 All-WAC honorable mentions in Easley, senior midfielder Justin Rasmussen, junior goalkeeper George Tasouris, junior forward Bert Wilton and senior defenders Ariel Aguas and Nick Barreiro.
SCOUTING
San Jose State is for third in the WAC with GCU and Incarnate Word with a 1-0 record, having won its first match at Dixie State, 2-1. The Spartans were picked to finish sixth in the WAC in the preseason coaches poll, earning 60 points.
Two Spartans were selected for the Preseason All-WAC Team: senior forward Rudi Castro and senior midfielder Max Allen.
San Jose State finished 2019 with a 5-12-2 record, going 5-4-2 in WAC play. The Spartans started last season on a five-match losing streak before winning back-to-back matches against CSU Bakersfield and Kansas City. San Jose State lost in the first round of the 2019 WAC Tournament, falling 1-0 to CSU Bakersfield.
San Jose State leads the all-time series against the Lopes 4-2-2. The last match between the two teams ended in a 2-2 tie in a double-overtime match at GCU Stadium on Oct. 11, 2019.
