Regular season wraps up at home

The Grand Canyon women's soccer team will wrap up the regular season at home this week with matches against Dixie State and Utah Valley. The Lopes control their destiny in pursuit of the program's first WAC regular-season title. With two wins, the Lopes will clinch the WAC West Division and the No. 1 seed in next week's WAC Tournament. A win on Thursday and a loss by Utah Valley would clinch at least a share of the regular-season title.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

HOME SWEET HOME: Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, the Lopes have enjoyed immense success at GCU Stadium this fall. GCU owns a 7-1 home record while outscoring opponents 22-7. In WAC play at GCU Stadium, the Lopes have defeated California Baptist, Seattle U and New Mexico State by a combined score of 13-1.
10-10 CLUB: Senior forward Marleen Schimmer made more GCU history on Saturday against New Mexico State. With an assist on a GCU goal in the 59th minute, Schimmer became the first GCU player to record 10 goals and 10 assists in a single season. The Mainz, Germany, native previously set GCU Division I-era records for points, goals and assists in a season.
UPCOMING WAC TOURNAMENT: The WAC Tournament will be hosted by Abilene Christian from Nov. 3-7. Three teams from each WAC division (West and Southwest) will play in a three-round tournament with the championship taking place on Nov. 7 at 11 a.m (Phoenix time). GCU, Utah Valley and New Mexico State already clinched a spot in the field from the West Division, but the seeding is still to be determined. If the Lopes clinch the No. 1 seed, they will earn a first-round bye. The full schedule can be seen here.

SCOUTING

Dixie State is coming off a 2-0 weekend at home, where they defeated California Baptist 3-2 and Seattle U 2-1. The Trailblazers will play in Phoenix on Thursday for the first time since 2012, when both teams were part of the Pac West Conference.

The trio of Jill Bennett, Whitley Griffiths and Kalea Woodyatt all lead Dixie State with four goals. Defensively, four goalies have played for the Trailblazers this season with junior Kayla Gonzales logging the most time between the posts with 14 starts. Her 97 saves and .795 save percentage lead the team.

Utah Valley enters this week with three straight shutout wins over Dixie State, Seattle U and California Baptist. Last season's WAC regular-season and tournament champs will travel to New Mexico State before playing GCU on Saturday.

The duo of sophomore Heather Stainbrook and redshirt junior Sadie Brockbank lead the Wolverines in scoring with a combined 15 goals, 12 assists and 42 points. Defensively, goalkeeper Brooklyn Nielsen ranks second in the WAC with a 1.03 goals against average this season and has allowed only two goals in the last five matches.

WHAT'S NEXT

GCU will travel to Abilene, Texas, for the WAC Tournament, in which a champion will secure an automatic NCAA tournament berth on Nov 7.
