DAVIS, Calif. – Grand Canyon never captured the momentum at UC Davis, losing 3-0 Wednesday night.
With a short week including a travel day Tuesday, the Lopes never found an answer on either end of the pitch, allowing multiple goals for the first time all season.
GCU rolled out the same starting 11 as they did in Saturday's victory over New Mexico, earning the first good look of the match, when a cross got the ball to senior midfielder and team goal-leader
Sophia Rubano. Rubano was just meters away from goal when her right-footed strike was deflected away by Aggie keeper Cat Pieper, who ended the night with eight saves and the shutout.
Just under two minutes later, UC Davis struck for its first goal of the night thanks to an Ashley Brewer cross that was flicked across the box by Aggie's leading scorer Kaya Herndon, and into the left side of the goal past a diving
Emma Knack in goal for the Lopes.
UC Davis scored again a minute into the second half, before Herndon scored again in the 68th minute to cap the scoring for the evening.
The Lopes (5-3-4, 1-1-1 MW )will head home for a couple days before getting back on a plane for Air Force, and a Sunday matinee vs. the Falcons.
