HONOLULU, Hawaii – Grand Canyon dropped Saturday's conference match at Hawaii in a competitive 1-0 loss to the Rainbow Wahine.
GCU (7-5-4, 3-3-1 MW) was riding a two-match win streak coming into the game, earning six points at home last week. The Lopes have now lost every road match in Mountain West play this season.
Hawaii (9-4-1, 6-1-0 MW) came into the match riding a five-match win streak, extending that streak to six games. Coming in to the match they were known to be a dangerous team on set pieces, scoring many times on corners and free kicks throughout the season.
In the 22nd minute they struck again putting the lone goal of the match home after a deflection and collection off yet again, a corner kick.
Grand Canyon has still only allowed more than one goal one time this season, on pace to break the program record in goals-against average which still sits at 0.81 goals per game.
The unlucky goal that came in the scrum of players in the box proved to be enough for Hawaii as both defenses locked things down the rest of the match.
In the second half GCU put the pressure on, possessing for most of the final 45 and causing Hawaii to clear the ball out of play early and often. However, despite the pace and momentum, the Lopes still only managed a single shot on goal, not producing any legit goal-scoring opportunities when they did get their opportunities.
Grand Canyon continues a couple trends with the loss, still only losing when shutout this season, as well as losing each time they have been shutout- not yet earning a 0-0 draw.
The loss keeps the Lopes in sixth place at ten points, now five points behind the fourth-place cut-off for the Mountain West Championship in Phoenix.
GCU returns to GCU Stadium for the final time in the regular season on Wednesday, when they host fifth-place Wyoming who sits at 13 points on the year.
