The Grand Canyon men's tennis team dropped the season opening match to BYU on Saturday afternoon on the road.
BYU (1-0) took the early lead after doubles taking the point with wins on courts one and three. GCU (0-1) had three newcomers in the lineup with
Jiri Novak teaming up with
Valentin Lang at the top spot and
Wolmar Boris-Moller and
Loic Van Zeggelaar playing on court three.
The Cougars continued to play strong into singles taking first sets on five of the six courts. Van Zeggelaar was the only Lope to win his first set, winning 7-5, in route to a match win with a 6-4 second set win at No. 6.
Despite the lopsided final score, the Lopes rebounded with close second set scorelines in singles. Both Novak and Boris-Moller each pushed their sets to tiebreakers while
Freddie Grant at No. 4 lost his second set 6-4.
The Lopes will look to rebound tomorrow with a match at Utah, the first of three Pac-12 schools on the schedule. The match will begin at noon and live streaming will be available on Pac-12.com.
